Blast Claims 3 Law Enforcement Officers Amid Eviction Action in Italy
Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 others were hurt in a seemingly intentional blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.
How It Happened
The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the house close to the city of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.
Legal Proceedings
One male and one female were arrested at the location and another man who escaped following the blast was located not long after. All three have been transported to the hospital.
The blast could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene displayed the property left as a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.
Background and Motive
The head of the Veneto area, the regional head, said the property was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.
Negotiators had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings set off the explosion.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander told the media.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he said.
Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the Interior Minister stated.
Casualties and Damage
Those injured by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.
According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.
The prosecutor thought the detonation had happened on a level above the access point and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the explosion, he revealed officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.
Community Reaction
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, adding that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
