Difficulties Continue for Relief Supplies in Gaza City In Spite Of Temporary Peace

Although the access route from Egypt starts functioning in the coming days, aid groups encounter major challenges providing aid to Gaza City, the region most severely affected by starvation, analysts state.

Transportation Problems

Key roads are virtually blocked due to massive destruction across the conflict-affected area – or are still under the control of military units. Any vehicle that stops working is probably will be instantly looted.

The main entry point, the key gateway to the north, destroyed during multiple years of war, has been shut down for many days, and government representatives have notified humanitarian organizations in Gaza that there are no current intentions to reopen the entry location, according to humanitarian staff.

Devastation in Northern Territories

The northern urban center was the objective of a large-scale military operation begun in August that was continuing when the peace agreement was agreed upon recently.

Devastation in the north has been extensive, with complete communities including local municipalities and adjacent communities in devastated as well as many of the outlying areas of the urban center.

"Any operation of a border point into Gaza is beneficial, but we need to guarantee we can access populations where they are," stated a senior director from a relief agency.

Humanitarian Conditions

Witnesses said many of the approximately 300,000 people who have returned to the northern area from the crowded shelter regions where they had been sheltering during the Israeli offensive were now "camping" among the ruins of their homes, often without any protection and with limited supplies or resources.

A spokesperson from a UN agency said the destruction in the northern territories was "shocking".

"There is block after block, building after building ... there is massive desperation for water. It's pretty harrowing. We require each access route open," the representative, who was in Gaza City recently, stated.

Insufficient Access

A community leader working from the northern city said the necessities in what used to be the area's thriving business and community focal point were "overwhelming".

"People have hope and optimism but there needs to be quick improvement on the border points. There has been no any significant change on the situation yet," the representative stated.

"We are still getting a insufficient volume of assistance [and] we are now commencing to comprehend the degree of devastation. So many streets are just full of rubble ... there is scarcely a building that is secure. There is damage and live explosives everywhere."

Ongoing Developments

Recently, relief groups said limited amounts of essential fuel came into Gaza for the first instance in multiple months, along with shipments of wheat, rice and fresh vegetables. The additional resources sent commercial prices falling.

At a mid-region location, a community member said there had been certain progress since the truce.

"The markets are full of supplies, fresh goods, and produce, although the costs are continuing to be expensive and not accessible for everyone," the resident said.

Winter Preparations

"The crucial necessities currently, specifically due to the arrival of winter, are to have a tent to keep us safe from the cold weather and cold-weather clothing because the stores do not have sufficient clothing for us or, if they exist, they are extremely limited and very expensive."

Several internationally-backed food preparation facilities in various locations have resumed functioning since the ceasefire.

Assistance Distribution

Trucks were stated to have entered the Kerem Shalom crossing through Israeli territory to Gaza during the week, though specific quantities were unknown.

Israel's news organization reported that Wednesday's assistance transports would include food, treatment resources, petroleum products, propane and equipment to restore essential services.

"Assistance resources remains flowing to the Gaza territory through the humanitarian corridor and other crossings after security checks," an Israeli security official stated.

Delivery Complications

But tracking the number of trucks could be deceptive, warned an expert from an international NGO. "We need to know what is in the transports and their loading status for it to be a really meaningful measurement," the official added.

Commercial operators are transporting fleets of vehicles carrying sweets, fizzy drinks and treats, which have poor dietary quality, while critical care for young people or individuals who have been without adequate food for multiple years are scarce.

Healthcare Conditions

In Gaza City, only seven medical centers are functioning, compared with numerous in July.

Various groups have significant funding worth of supplies stored near the territory pending distribution. A UN agency assisting Palestinians across the territory for decades has multiple months of supplies of sustenance for the entire population in place to be transported.

"We maintain the supplies, the tools and the expertise ... we simply must have the access," said one aid worker, who recently came back from Gaza.

Diplomatic Factors

An international initiative outlines that "comprehensive" support should reach Gaza and be provided through the UN and the Red Crescent, without disruption from either military groups or government forces.

This appears to exclude the controversial authority-approved relief agency which began operations in May, resulting in disorderly situations and multiple fatalities as large groups of people congregated around its aid locations.
