{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces near miss with F1 marshals
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when a pair of track officials crossed the track directly in front of him
The concerning event happened on the third circuit when safety workers were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to change his damaged front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"
"I rejoined with a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two dudes sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Clearly there's been a failure in communication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a active circuit track officials can be allowed to just run across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"
Official Investigation Underway
F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was advised that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the governing body
"On lap three, track officials were alerted and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once every vehicle had gone by"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy personnel were canceled and a double yellow flag was raised in that area"
"The examination is ongoing what happened subsequent to that time"
